NEH Fellowships are competitive awards granted to individual scholars pursuing projects that embody exceptional research, rigorous analysis, and clear writing. Applications must clearly articulate a project's value to humanities scholars, general audiences, or both.

NEH relies on a competitive application process and a rigorous peer review system to determine which applications are most deserving of federal support. For deadlines and application procedures, go to NEH's Grants section, which lists all of NEH's current grant offerings.

Awards are made to scholars working on research projects of significance to specific humanities fields and to the humanities as a whole. For example, grants support projects as diverse as the deciphering and editing of the Dead Sea Scrolls, and the editing of the correspondence of Charles Darwin.

NEH will provide funding in the form of grants. The period of performance is six to twelve months at a stipend of $5,000 per month. The maximum award is $60,000 for a twelve-month period of performance.
