Minnesota requires ignition interlock devices for all DWI offenders who wish to regain driving privileges. The device requires drivers to test their breath alcohol content (BrAC) before they can start their vehicle. If they fail, they will be unable to start the car.

✓ If a failed initial breath test is recorded, the device will lock out for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, the device will allow another breath test. The driver has 10 minutes to supply a passing breath test. Failure to provide a passing breath test is a violation.
