Waikato-Tainui are tangata whenua ('people of the land') of the Waikato region. Thirty nine of their marae are located within Waikato District Council's boundaries. Did you know that 'Tainui' was the name of an infant who did not survive childbirth? At the child's burial site grew a great tree.

The Kaumaatua Grant is offered to tribal members registered to Waikato-Tainui who are over the age of 60 years. It provides relief and support in aged-related health costs. In Māori tradition, Tainui was one of the great ocean-going canoes in which Polynesians migrated to New Zealand approximately 800 years ago. In Māori tradition, the Tainui waka was commanded by the chief Hoturoa, who had decided to leave Hawaiki because over-population had led to famine and warfare.

Tainui Group Holdings (TGH) took over the management and growth of the tribe's commercial assets, worth $166m in 2003. Today those assets have increased to $1 billion. This includes The Base at Te Rapa, the Novotel Tainui in Hamilton and at Auckland International Airport, and the Ibis Tainui Hamilton.

Kaumātua Hauora Grants are available for beneficiaries sixty-five years and older. The grants can be used to help with health expenses, for glasses and eye treatments, dental and denture work, specialist and GP visits and prescriptions for assistance with hearing, medical alarms and mobility or disability equipment.
