Vassar has moved way beyond its foray into coeducation, even if all of the world has not. Thirty-six graduating classes have gone out into the world since the Class of 1974 (the first coed class with males matriculating as freshmen).

These schools, which were founded in the 19th century, were meant to educate the sisters of men at the Ivies. The "Seven Sisters," as the institutions are known, include Vassar, Barnard (Columbia's sister institute), and Radcliffe College, which merged with Harvard in 1977.

The full-time Vassar undergraduate population is made up of 62% women, and 38% men.

Vassar declined an offer to merge with Yale University and became independently coeducational in 1969. Barnard College was founded in 1889 as a women's college affiliated with Columbia University.

Coeducational since 1969, Vassar College set the standard for higher education for women for more than 100 years and now sets the standard for true coeducation.

With a GPA of 4.0, Vassar requires you to be at the top of your class. You'll need nearly straight A's in all your classes to compete with other applicants. Furthermore, you should be taking hard classes - AP or IB courses - to show that college-level academics is a breeze.

But in May 1968, faculty overwhelming endorsed—102 Ayes to 3 Nays—the admission of men to Vassar itself. The reason for this outcome, as stated in A Report on the Education of Men at Vassar (1968), possibly stemmed from the faculty's fear that only the Board of Trustees would shape the new coordinate colleges.
