Hawaii County is the largest county by land area (10,432 square kilometers) and has the second-largest county population behind Honolulu. Its largest city, Hilo, is located on the northeast side of the island.

The Counties and Their Relationship to the State There are four counties in the State: the City and County of Honolulu, the County of Maui, the County of Hawaiʻi and the County of Kauaʻi (and one quasi county, Kalawao).

Because of the small population (82 as of the 2020 United States Census), Kalawao County does not have the same functions as other Hawaii counties. Instead, it is a judicial district of Maui County, which includes the rest of the island of Molokaʻi.

There are five counties of Hawaii on the Hawaiian Islands in the United States. Counties are the only lower governments in the State of Hawaii. This is unusual in the United States. Most states include city governments, township governments, or other local authorities.
