The IRS is now accepting tax returns for the 2023 filing season, and IRS Free File – a program that makes brand-name tax software and electronic filing available to most taxpayers for free – is now open and ready for taxpayers to use.

For 2023, they'll get the regular standard deduction of $27,700 for a married couple filing jointly. They also both get an additional standard deduction amount of $1,500 per person for being over 65.

Most refunds issued in less than 21 days; EITC refunds for many available starting February 28. The IRS anticipates most taxpayers will receive their refund within 21 days of when they file electronically, if they choose direct deposit and there are no issues with their tax return.

For single taxpayers and married individuals filing separately, the standard deduction rises to $13,850 for 2023, up $900, and for heads of households, the standard deduction will be $20,800 for tax year 2023, up $1,400 from the amount for tax year 2022.
