All high school students MUST be enrolled in and earn passing grades in a minimum of five one-credit courses (or the equivalent) each and every grading period to have continuing eligibility.

After establishing ninth-grade eligibility, you are permitted only eight (8) semesters of athletic eligibility. The semesters are taken in order of attendance once ninth-grade eligibility has been established.

OHSAA Eligibility – Age (Bylaw 4-2) When a high school student (grades 9-12) turns 20 years of age, he/she becomes ineligible for interscholastic athletics. There is an exception to this bylaw, so please arrange a meeting with your principal or athletic administrator to review this exception within Bylaw 4-2-1.

Once a student attains the age of 20, the student will no longer be eligible for interscholastic athletic competition notwithstanding where that 20th birthday falls in relation to the sports season.

A student shall be enrolled in and have passed a minimum of 20 semester credits of new work (a make-up class is not considered new work) with a GPA of 2.0 or higher at the grading period which determines eligibility to be academically eligible to participate in extracurricular/cocurricular activities.

You are not eligible for participation in a sport if you have ever: (1) Taken pay, or the promise of pay, for competing in that sport. [Bylaw 12.1. 2] (2) Agreed (orally or in writing) to compete in professional athletics in that sport. (3) Played on any professional athletics team as defined by the NCAA in that sport.

SENIORS – Senior athletes are not eligible for Junior Varsity competition and shall not play on any JV team in any sport. Exceptions: Cross Country (see the Cross Country By-Laws for specific details) and by consent of the League Commissioner. Also see “Eligibility of New Students” above.

High school student athletes have a few requirements that they must meet to be eligible to play sports. However, maybe the most important of them all would be their grade point average. Athletes' GPA must be higher than a 2.0 or a C average.

In California -- which has its share of crime-ridden impoverished neighborhoods -- state law requires students have a 2.0 GPA in order to play sports. It's one of 12 states and the District of Columbia that have GPA standards for sports statewide.
