Typically, the Controller is a Talker while one or more instruments on the GPIB are Listeners. Controllers — The Controller specifies which devices are Talkers or Listeners. A GPIB system can contain multiple Controllers. One of them is designated the System Controller.

The maximum bandwidth for GPIB is 1.8 MB/s or 14.4 Mb/s for standard IEEE 488.1 and 7.7 MB/s or 61.6 Mb/s for high-speed IEEE 488.1. This gives 100 Mb/s Ethernet a 7× bandwidth advantage over GPIB. GPIB, however, has a shorter latency than Ethernet.

The GPIB bus is a cable with two 24-pin connectors that allow you to connect multiple devices to each other. The bus and connector have these features and limitations: You can connect up to 15 devices to a bus. You can connect devices in a star configuration, a linear configuration, or a combination of configurations.

There are two basic types of GPIB converters: GPIB interfaces and GPIB controllers. GPIB interfaces use a port or bus to transfer data between the computer to which the GPIB board is connected and another device or instrument. GPIB interfaces are used in systems that do not require controllers.
