Withholding is the income an employer takes out of an employee's paycheck and remits to the federal, state, and/or local government. It is calculated based on the amount of income earned, the taxpayer's filing status, the number of allowances claimed, and any additional amount of the employee requests.

If you receive a Form 1099-DIV and do not report the dividends on your tax return, the IRS will likely send you a CP2000, Underreported Income notice. This IRS notice will propose additional tax, penalties and interest on your dividends and any other unreported income.

Ordinary dividends are the total of all the dividends reported on a 1099-DIV form. Qualified dividends are all or a portion of the total ordinary dividends. They're reported in box 1a on Form 1099-DIV.

A corporation files Form 973 to claim a consent dividend deduction under Internal Revenue Code section 565.

Purpose of form. Form 972 is used by a shareholder who agrees to report a consent dividend as taxable income in the form of a dividend on the shareholder's own tax return even though the shareholder receives no actual cash distribution of the consented amounts.

Enter any qualified dividends from box 1b on Form 1099-DIV on line 3a of Form 1040, Form 1040-SR or Form 1040-NR.
