The Auditor of State is responsible for auditing all public offices in Ohio including those in cities, villages, counties, townships, schools, and universities, as well as the many departments, agencies, and commissions of state government. Over 4,600 audits are performed at least every two years.

The auditor is publicly elected every four years and may serve a total of two terms.
