Requirements and OSHA Fire Watch Certification In order to become OSHA-certified as a fire watch, you'll need to complete Safety by Design's fire watch training class and pass an online test. Once you pass the test, you'll receive a card stating that you're a certified fire watch.

Fire watchers need to have a high school diploma and special training. Fire watch is an important job meant for preventing fires and getting help in case of an emergency. Fire lookouts are the same as fire watchers but watch over a forest rather than a workplace.

Fire watches must continue monitoring the hot work area for at least 30 minutes after completion of the hot work to ensure nothing ignites. This includes all areas that required additional fire watch personnel (e.g., blind compartments and different levels within a space).

Open flames or other ignition sources must be kept at least 50 feet away from flammable or combustible liquids. No smoking will be permitted during the fueling process. Containers being filled will be placed directly on the ground or a grounding strap attached to form a connection to ground.

The Fire Watch Shall: • Continually patrol the area, structure or facility and document the patrol a. minimum of once every hour. • Be trained in the use of a fire extinguisher and have one accessible at all. times. • Be capable of communicating with building occupants and the fire.

Be specific, noting the building, floor, or area being monitored. Record the name of the individual or team responsible for the fire watch. This could be a specific employee or a designated fire watch team. Note any specific instructions or tasks that are identified for the fire watch.

A fire watch shall be maintained for at least a half hour after completion of welding or cutting operations to detect and extinguish possible smoldering fires. Authorization. Before cutting or welding is permitted, the area shall be inspected by the individual responsible for authorizing cutting and welding operations.

The log must be available to the DC Fire Department at all times during the fire watch and include the following information: Times that the periodic patrol was completed (include your start and end of shift). Name of the person conducting the fire watch. Record of any communication(s) to the Fire Department.
