Always fill out the headings on your scorebook with the details of the match, date, venue, round number etc. Every ball bowled must be recorded. If no runs or sundries occur, then record a dot against the batsman and also in the bowler's column.

While an innings is in progress, the innings score comprises the number of runs scored by the batting team and the number of wickets taken by the bowling team. For example, a team that has scored 100 runs and lost three wickets is said to have a score of "one hundred for three", which is written 100–3 or 100/3.

A team's score is always expressed, after all, as the number of runs they've collected 'for' the number of wickets they've lost. If a team have scored 100 runs and lost three wickets, for example, their score would be 100 for three which would be written as 100 – 3.

To score a run requires the batter to strike the ball and run to the opposite end of the pitch while their batting partner runs in the other direction. To record the scoring run, both batters need to touch the floor behind the popping crease with either their bat or body.

Scoring runs in Test Cricket If the batter manages to hit the ball to the edge of the field – otherwise known as the boundary – then they and their team are immediately awarded four runs.
