You may be granted a temporary order that will protect you until the final hearing. The court will set a date and time within 21 days for a final hearing. At the final hearing, the judge will listen to both sides and decide if a final order should be issued, and that order could last up to one year.

A restraining order (also called a “protective order”) is a court order that can protect someone from being physically or sexually abused, threatened, stalked, or harassed.

The temporary order will last until you can have a full court hearing on your application for a permanent order, which is usually within 5 to 15 days. A permanent order can be issued only after a court hearing in which you and the abuser both have a chance to tell your sides of the story.
