There are vaccines to prevent hepatitis A and hepatitis B; however, there is no vaccine for hepatitis C. The page “What is hepatitis?” more information about the differences between hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C.

The hepatitis B vaccine is given as a series of three shots. The first dose is given within 24 hours of birth. The second dose is given one to two months after the first dose, and the third dose is given between 6 months and 18 months of age.

The good news is that the hepatitis B vaccine gives 80% to 100% protection to people who get the vaccine. There are seven vaccines available in the United States that protect against hepatitis B: HepB-only vaccines: Engerix-B protects infants, children, and adults from hepatitis B.

Hepatitis B vaccine is available for all age groups. The hepatitis B vaccine is recommended for all infants, all children or adolescents younger than 19 years of age who have not been vaccinated, all adults age 19 through 59 years, and adults age 60 years or older with risk factors for hepatitis B infection.

Children greater than 1 year of age, and adults, can be vaccinated to protect them for a lifetime against a hepatitis B infection. The vaccine is given at 0, 1 and 6 months. The third dose is needed for complete, long-term protection.
