You must surrender the vehicle registration to the DMV. If two vehicle plates are lost, stolen or destroyed (or one plate if the vehicle was issued only one plate, e.g. motorcycles), you need to notify the police, and ask the police to complete a police report.

You must surrender your vehicle registration and plates to the DMV before the New York State liability insurance is cancelled. If you register your vehicle in another state and surrender the New York vehicle plates to the New York DMV, you can get insurance in the other state.

Make sure to only mail your plates in an envelope (no boxes) and take off all tags and plate accessories. You WILL need to complete a PD-7 when surrendering your plates to the DMV.

dmv.ny.gov Form FS-6T is the receipt issued to you after you apply for a NYS certificate of title. You must get this receipt at any Motor Vehicles office before you can file an application for apportioned registration in the International Registration Program.

You surrender the vehicle plates during the first year of the registration, and you qualify for a refund of $30.25. This is a refund of the $31.25 fee for the second year of the registration with the $1 processing fee subtracted. There is no refund of other fees or taxes.

We will mail you a plate surrender receipt (form FS-6T) as well as a refund check, if applicable. DMV will mail these to the address on the registration.
