Since 1969, the National Association of Black Accountants, Inc. (.nabainc.org) has been the leader in addressing the issues and lack of diversity in the accounting, finance, and business world.

In 1921, 25 years after the first certified public accountant (CPA) certificate was granted in the U.S., John W. Cromwell, Jr. became the first Black CPA.

The mission of NABA is to address the professional needs of its members and to build leaders that shape the future of the accounting and finance profession with an unfaltering commitment to inspire the same in their successors.

Our Founders In December 1969, nine African-Americans financial leaders met in New York City to discuss the unique challenges and limited opportunities they faced in the accounting profession.
