Clara Barton School is a contributing resource in the Bordentown Historic District. Its significance derives from being the state's first 'free public school' started by Clara Barton and where she taught from 1852-1854. Her first class held six male students.
Barton's Red Cross began providing aid to victims in natural disasters, first with the Michigan forest fires of 1881 and then the Johnstown, PA, flood in 1889. She continued her service to Americans in war by traveling to Cuba with supplies for victims in the Spanish American War.
Clarissa Harlowe Barton, known as Clara, is one of the most honored women in American history. Barton risked her life to bring supplies and support to soldiers in the field during the Civil War. She founded the American Red Cross in 1881, at age 59, and led it for the next 23 years.
Clara Barton never married or had children. She had several nieces and nephews on whom she lavished her attention.
She died at her home in Glen Echo, Maryland, now a national historic site, in April 1912. Her last words were “Let me go. Let me go.”
On April 23, 1635, the first public school in what would become the United States was established in Boston, Massachusetts. Known as the Boston Latin School, this boys-only public secondary school was led by schoolmaster Philemon Pormont, a Puritan settler. The Boston Latin School was strictly for college preparation.
