Your membership with NYCERS provides a guaranteed income for life upon retirement, as well as the opportunity to provide a continued retirement benefit to a designated beneficiary upon your death after retirement.

The retiree receives a reduced monthly lifetime benefit. If the retiree dies within five years from the date of retirement, the reduced monthly retirement benefit will continue to be paid to the surviving designated primary beneficiary for the unexpired balance of the five-year period.

While traditional pensions promise retirees a fixed monthly benefit for the rest of their lives, 401(k)s and other defined contribution plans offer no such guarantees.

You will receive your first full pension check, which will include any appropriate retroactive adjustments, approxima- tely 2 months after we receive your retirement option select- ion. If NYCERS has an unusually large number of retirement applications filed at one time, the process may take longer.
