The appendix is a thin tube that is joined to the large intestine. It sits in the lower right part of your belly (abdomen). When you are a young child, your appendix is a working part of your immune system, which helps your body to fight disease.

Symptoms Sudden pain that begins on the right side of the lower abdomen. Sudden pain that begins around the navel and often shifts to the lower right abdomen. Pain that worsens with coughing, walking or making other jarring movements. Nausea and vomiting. Loss of appetite.
