This process can take a long time — in most cases, an average of 10 years will pass between initial discovery to full approval, with the clinical trial stages taking six to seven years of that time.

The Office of Clinical Research in partnership with the PSOM Society of Clinical Research Professionals will be hosting a weeklong celebration of our Clinical Research Professionals (CRPs) and will observe the International Clinical Trials Awareness Day during the week of May 20, 2024.

Phase 3 studies usually involve around 300-3,000 study participants and can last 1-4 years. * Approximately 25-30% of drugs in Phase 3 studies will move to the next phase or approval per the FDA.

Follow-up duration refers to the stated length of time a person's health will be monitored over time after a therapy or intervention. This includes keeping track of the health of people who participate in a clinical study or clinical trial for a period of time, both during the study and after the study ends.

Phase II studies determine the effectiveness of an experimental drug on a particular disease or condition in approximately 100 to 300 volunteers. This phase may last from several months to two years.

In Phase 2 studies, researchers administer the drug to a group of patients with the disease or condition for which the drug is being developed. Typically involving a few hundred patients, these studies aren't large enough to show whether the drug will be beneficial.
