The university was created by law in 1865, and instruction began in 1870. It was then known as the Indiana State Normal School. It began offering collegiate courses and awarded its first bachelor's degree in 1908. Graduate education at the school began in 1927.

In 1969, a committee created the Chief Quabachi concept as a mascot for the school. This Indian Chief (and accompanying legend) was used as a mascot until 1989. In 1995, the university welcomed Sycamore Sam to the ISU family. The blue-and-white creature is a favorite among young and old alike.

In 1965, the Indiana General Assembly renamed the college as Indiana State University in recognition of increasing student population and expansion of degrees offered.

In January, 1922, it was announced that the name Sycamores had won a popular vote of the student body, although there is some question as to how serious the student body was in picking the name. Nevertheless, Indiana State University has used this rather unique name since this date.

Sycamore Sam is the official mascot of Indiana State University! Students will find Sam at numerous athletic events including all men's and women's home basketball games, all home football games, women's home volleyball matches, and much more.
