National History Day is a nonprofit organization in College Park, Maryland that operates an annual project-based contest for students in grades 6-12. It has affiliates in all fifty states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, South Korea, China, South Asia, and Central America.

State Contest NHD-CA, one of the largest state History Day competitions takes place each spring with over 1,600 participants.

Each year, National History Day uses a theme to provide a lens through which students can examine history. The annual theme frames the research for students and teachers alike. It is intentionally broad enough to allow students to select topics from any place (local, national, or world) and any period in history.

PAPER RULES √ Requirement: My paper is an original creation, showing my historical research, analysis, and argument in a written format. My paper is grammatically correct. The paper is between 1,500 and 2,500 words.

NHD's core program is its competition in which students in grades 6–12 choose a topic and dive deeply into the past by conducting extensive research in libraries, archives, and museums.

The awards for first, second, and third place at the national level are $1000, $500, and $250, respectively. "Outstanding Entry" awards are also given to two projects from each state: one junior entry and one senior entry. There are also more than a dozen special prizes awarded worth between $250 and $10,000.

About 3,000 students from across the United States and overseas compete each June at the University of Maryland, College Park.
