Get International Education Week Catching Up Or Leading The Way: The Need For Internationalizing

“The beauty of studying abroad is gaining a broader understanding of other cultures. Having access to other people and building relationships with those people on their home turf enables one to think more creatively and flexibly, necessary skills in today's competitive work environment.

When you put yourself in unfamiliar environments, you gain a global network, an edge in the workplace, and skills that last a lifetime. If your degree program includes an international component, you will learn to work alongside diverse peers and develop cultural empathy.

One of the easiest ways to celebrate International Education Week is to see if your campus is hosting IEW events. Depending on the institution, you might see special menus appear at campus restaurants, enjoy free concerts, join international movie nights, or hear from guest speakers.

“International Education Week is an excellent opportunity for students to learn about international opportunities like studying abroad, internships, the Peace Corps, foreign service, and international issues and problems,” says Economics Professor and IEW program lead Beth Wilson.

Through study abroad, you can gain international experience and skills such as intercultural sensitivity, the ability to deal with ambiguity, and adaptation to new surroundings–all highly valued by employers. Abroad, you can learn to relate with people from different backgrounds, an important ability in the workplace.
