College of Engineering Undergraduate Policy A student enrolled in fewer than 12 units in the fall or spring term is considered a part-time student. More information on studying part-time can be found here.

To be considered full-time, a student must be registered in a minimum of 12 credits. Students ordinarily are expected to proceed at the rate of four courses per semester. Full-time tuition covers 12-18 credits.

Part-time students are enrolled in 0-11 credit units per semester and charged the prevailing per credit rate for tuition.

Courses carry 0 to 4 units; however, most courses (that is, full-term courses) carry 3 units, with doctoral-level courses carrying 4 units. Full-time registration is at least 9 units per term.

Enrollment in fewer than 12 credits in any semester requires advanced approval. Part-time status is usually granted for only one semester during a student's enrollment at CAS. Petitions for part-time status can be found here. Only in unusual circumstances will a second petition be granted.

To be considered a full-time undergraduate degree candidate, a student must be registered in a minimum of 12 units. Students are expected to proceed at the rate of 16–18 units per term. Students will be assessed a tuition fee for any units beyond 18, in any given term.

A student enrolled in 12 to 18 units per term will be considered full time and will be charged full tuition and fees. A Director of Graduate Studies must petition to register for a course overload of more than 18 units on behalf of the student. Tuition is assessed per unit beyond 18.

Full-time first-year students, sophomores, and juniors have a maximum unit limit of 18 units, and students with senior standing (96 or more units completed) have a maximum unit limit of 20 units.
