Instructions to Scout: The main references listed on requirement #2 on your Eagle Scout Rank Application, are required to write recommendation letters. The only reference that may be omitted is employer, if you do not have a job. If you do belong to a faith community, a parent must provide the religious reference.

An Eagle Scout candidate must demonstrate that they live by the principles of the Scout Oath, and Law in their daily life. In this regard, the candidate has indicated that you know them personally, and that you would be willing to provide a letter of recommendation on their behalf.

It is my privilege to write this letter of recommendation for _____________, who aspires to attain the rank of Eagle Scout. I have known _____________ since _________, and over the years have watched him/her grow and become an individual who is (Main Scout Law points the candidate embodies).

Letter writers often begin by stating that it's an honor or a privilege to recommend the candidate for the rank of Eagle Scout.In the following paragraph, introduce yourself and establish how you know the candidate. Mention when you met them or how long you've known them.

To attain the Eagle rank, a Scout must earn at least 21 merit badges, fulfill leadership roles and display outdoor skills, demonstrate by example the Scout Oath and Law, and complete a comprehensive service project in the community.

The Eagle Scout Rank Application provides 6 spots to write the names of people you have asked for recommendations. However, you are required to have a minimum of 3 letters of recommendation for your Eagle Board of Review. These three may not be from family members or your troop leaders.

As others have stated, BSA does not endorse any particular religion. In order to become an Eagle Scout, you must have your Eagle Scout Application signed by your religious leader.

Your Eagle Scout application will ask for five reference letters, six if you are employed. One of those references is labeled “religious.” This is a request for someone who knows you well enough to speak to your religious or spiritual values.
