If an applicant wishes to have an application published earlier than the date that is eighteen months after the earliest filing date for which benefit is claimed, applicant may submit a request in compliance with 37 CFR 1.219 and the publication fee set forth in 37 CFR 1.18(d).

A Publication Number number includes a four-digit year, followed by a seven-digit sequence code followed by a two-character Kind Code that is assigned by the USPTO. The system displays the publication number with or without the "US" prefix and the Kind Code suffix (e.g., US YYYY-9999999 A9 or 9999-9999999).

The standard number format for searching for PCT applications in the Register consists of the WIPO code WO followed by the year of filing (four digits), the country code of the country (two characters) and a five-digit serial number, adding up to a fixed length of 13 characters. For example: WO2007IB51010.

The WIPO patent publications are named 'WO' standing for 'world' followed by the year in which the invention was patented (last two digits), followed by a publication number (a number given to each patent), followed by either A1 for the first publication or A2 for the second publication.

Utility patent applications, with a few exceptions, must all be published and made publicly available within 18 months after filing. 4 However, all design patent applications are required to be kept in secret in the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) until the patent issues on the application.

The patent number usually appears in the top right-hand corner of the front page of a patent document. Patent document numbers consist of three parts: a country code that identifies the country of origin, a document number and a kind code that identifies the type of document.

The international publication number shall be used on the published international application and in the Gazette entry. It shall consist of the two-letter code “WO” followed by a four-digit indication of the year of publication, a slant, and a serial number consisting of six digits (e.g., “WO 2004/123456”).
