Both parties must appear in person with a valid photo government-issued ID. No copies or digital images are allowed. No appointment is necessary for a marriage license. You may either fill out the application online prior to visiting our office.

You need an appointment to get a marriage license. You must pay for the license when you make the appointment.

The cost of a marriage license in California is $61 and is valid anywhere in the state. Then it is a matter of having an authorized officiant solemnize the marriage. The Officiant usually charges a fee, but if you have a friend who is ordained it may be free.

There is no waiting period. The clerk will give you your license immediately. If you have been married before, you must show proof of divorce, death or annulment. The cost for applying varies by county, and some counties will only accept cash payments.

In Person Visit one of our office locations. You will be asked to complete an application. To obtain authorized copies, you must present a valid government-issued photo ID.​​ Allow 20 minutes from receipt of completed application and payment to receive your certificate(s).​

If you were married in the U.S., contact the vital records office in the state where you were married. They will tell you the cost, what information you need to supply, and if you can get a copy online, by mail, or in person.

Marriage Licenses. Marriage licenses are now available for both walk-in service and by appointment; however, customers must complete an online marriage application prior to visiting any of our offices. Appointments are highly recommended and can be made online. A marriage license is valid for 90 days.

The Office records the license and it then becomes a marriage certificate. Typically you can purchase your marriage certificate ten business days after the license is received at the Clerk-Recorder's Office. Call the Office to check on the status of your certificate: (408) 299-5688.
