There are six classifications of driver's licenses in Illinois: A, B, C, D, L and M. These are typed by the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of the vehicle and any towed vehicles. Class D is the most common driver's license.

Class D — Any motor vehicle with a GVWR of 16,000 pounds or less. Does not include A. B, C, L or M vehicles. Class L — Any motor-driven cycle with less than 150cc displacement.

Class B — Single vehicle with a GVWR* of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds. Class C — Single vehicle with a GVWR* of at least 16,001 pounds but less than 26,001 pounds.

A person applying for a CDL is disqualified if they have been convicted of a felony, which involves the use of a vehicle for one (1) year for a first offense and for life (with the possibility of reinstatement after 10 years) for a second offense.

The new CDL law was implemented February 7, 2022 and requires drivers to complete Entry-Level Drive Training (ELDT) from a training provider listed on FMCSA's Training Provider Registry (TPR) before being scheduled for a skills test.
