An F-1 student may transfer between SEVP-certified schools. Regulations governing school transfers are in 8 CFR 214.2(f)(8). The transfer process is a way to electronically move Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) records and retain the same SEVIS identification (ID) number for the student.

The five month rule refers to the termination of a student's record in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) based on the student being away from classes or not in status for five months.

Typically, most universities accept transfer students with up to two years of study at another university. Some universities may not accept transfer students with more than two years enrolled at another college.

Provide the DSO with any required paperwork such as your acceptance letter or contact information for your new school. Request a new I-20 form from your new school's DSO. Register for classes at your new school within 15 days of the program start date listed on your new I-20.

You need to inform the DSO that you have arrived in the United States and want to transfer immediately to another SEVP-certified school. You must show proof of acceptance to your new school. You must report to your new school and enroll in a full course of study within 30 days of arriving in the United States.
