Look out for any obstructions & slippery underfoot conditions. How often should you look up when “On or near the line” & how many seconds should you be in a position of safety prior to a train arriving? Look up every five seconds & be in a position of safety every ten seconds.

Safety briefing The COSS (controller of site safety) will make sure that you have a safe system of work (sometimes called SSOW) so you are not at risk from trains or electrified equipment. The COSS wears a blue badge with 'COSS' on it.

To comply with NR/L2/OHS/019 Safety of People working On or Near the Line, a Safe System of Work needs to be considered based on the nature, location and duration of the work (see SSOWP Hierarchy Comparison).

Form RT9909 12-03 This form is used by a COSS to record the arrangements for setting up a safe system of work and briefing the work group.

The Site Warden is provided to make sure that if someone in the group strays outside the Site Warden's warning area towards an open line, they shout a warning that tells them to get back. All these people have to be trained and certified competent. Their role is to help you stay safe on, or near, the railway line.

Before you go onto or near the line: This includes safety boots, a hard hat (white or blue) and orange high visibility clothing. You may not wear yellow, red or green clothing or hard hat because these colours are used for signals on the railway. Know the speed and direction of trains. Know any other hazards.

It is the responsibility of the COSS (OLP) to brief all persons that they are responsible for and confirm they fully understand the extent of the isolation, the safe working limits, any live equipment, and any residual electrical hazards.
