To score a run requires the batter to strike the ball and run to the opposite end of the pitch while their batting partner runs in the other direction. To record the scoring run, both batters need to touch the floor behind the popping crease with either their bat or body.

Scoring runs in Test Cricket If the batter manages to hit the ball to the edge of the field – otherwise known as the boundary – then they and their team are immediately awarded four runs. If they can hit the ball over the boundary without it bouncing first, then they and their team are immediately awarded six runs.

Always fill out the headings on your scorebook with the details of the match, date, venue, round number etc. Every ball bowled must be recorded. If no runs or sundries occur, then record a dot against the batsman and also in the bowler's column.

For example five runs are awarded to the batting team if the ball hits a helmet on the ground belonging to the fielding team; five runs are awarded to the fielding team if the batting team causes avoidable damage to the wicket after due warning by the umpire.

Batters may run on any ball whether it is hit or not. Batters score runs by running between the striker's popping crease and the `running crease' (score one for each completed run).

A team is awarded 16 points for a victory, with both sides earning eight points for a tie and five points apiece if a match is drawn. Any points scored in the first innings is added on.
