It is recommended that fire drills be carried out at least once a year, or more frequently if necessary. The frequency of fire drills will depend on the size and complexity of your workplace, the number of employees, and the type of work being carried out.

How often should a fire evacuation drill take place? Regulation-wise, it is a legal requirement for you to conduct a minimum of one fire evacuation drill per year at your workplace. There's no maximum number of times you can run one, but as a good rule of thumb, once a quarter (three months) is a good frequency.

Under Wisconsin Statutes 118.07 fire drills must be conducted at least once each month, tornado or other hazard drills twice per year, and school safety incidents twice per year. Fire drills must be conducted at least once each month that the school is occupied with pupils.

Both announced and unannounced drills should be conducted several times a year. Drills should vary (evacuation and shelter-in-place [SIP]) and pose a variety of challenges, such as closed off hallways/stairwells, blocked doors, or unconscious individuals, along designated evacuation routes.

Employers are required to implement and conduct annual drills to ensure the safe and orderly evacuation of employees during a fire, disaster, or any other workplace emergency.
