A Bill of Sale is not legally required for selling a vehicle in North Carolina, but it's a good idea to create one for both you and the buyer. The Bill of Sale can be helpful if problems arise when the buyer goes to transfer the title or register the vehicle in their name.

​General Requirements The individual who is titling the vehicle must have a valid North Carolina driver license or ID. For new North Carolina residents, a valid out-of-state driver license and their North Carolina Temporary Driving Certificate are required.

Meet the requirements and provide the proper documentation, including proof of liability insurance....This information includes the: Buyer and recipient's name and address. Date of sale or date of delivery. Seller's signature and hand-printed name. Odometer reading (if required) Damage disclosure statement.

Once you pay off your loan, your lienholder will send you an official release of lien letter. You'll take that to your state BMV or DMV (or, in some cases, to your local city/town clerk's office) along with your current title and apply for an updated title.

Once you've paid off your auto loan, you can apply for a clear title (i.e. remove the lien) by submitting the following at your local NC DMV office: Application for Removal of Lien from the Certificate of Title (Form MVR-8). Application for Duplicate Title (Form MVR-4).

You'll need to visit your local NC DMV office in order to complete your title transfer.

North Carolina lien waivers do not need to be notarized to be effective.
