The Hess Cognitive Rigor Matrices assist teachers in applying what cognitive demand might look like in the classroom and guides test developers in designing and aligning test items and performance tasks.

Another way to summarize the difference is that Bloom's levels are focused on what students are expected to do; notice how each level of the taxonomy is an action verb. DOK, however, is focused more on the cognitive load required of students as they are answering questions.

Webb's Depth of Knowledge (DoK) Depth of Knowledge or DoK is another type of framework used to identify the level of rigor for an assessment. In 1997, Dr. Norman Webb developed the DoK to categorize activities ing to the level of complexity in thinking.

Depth of Knowledge measures how deeply students know, understand, and are aware of what they are learning to answer a question or solve a problem. It categorizes tasks by the complexity of thinking—not difficulty—used to complete them. Low DOK does not necessarily mean low difficulty and vice versa.

The Hessian matrix was developed in the 19th century by the German mathematician Ludwig Otto Hesse and later named after him. Hesse originally used the term "functional determinants". The Hessian is sometimes denoted by H or, ambiguously, by ∇2.

The Cognitive Rigor Matrix aligns the six Bloom's Taxonomy levels along the columns of the matrix and the four Webb's Depth-of-Knowledge levels along the rows.
