Through pretend play, your child is using their imagination to act out common scenarios they experience or see on a regular basis. When you see your child pretending to talk on the phone, shave their face, put lipstick on for the party, or use keys to unlock a play car, you are witnessing pretend play.

When your child engages in pretend (or dramatic) play, he is actively experimenting with the social and emotional roles of life. Through cooperative play, he learns how to take turns, share responsibility, and creatively problem-solve.

Examples of pretend play are: being superheroes, playing 'mummies and daddies', playing shopping, dress-ups, playing flying to the moon, tea-parties, playing trucks in the sandpit and playing with dolls and teddies to name a few.

Play food and some toy pots and pans or a toy kitchen can encourage kids to whip up great pretend meals. Or your child may just choose to put their stuffed toys to bed and read them a bedtime story. Whatever they choose to pretend, it'll likely reflect parts of their own life and experience.

Role play involves taking on a defined role such as a teacher or doctor and imitating socially defined rules for this role, whereas pretend play is more loosely structured.
