Georgia Superior Courts The courts are divided into 10 judicial districts, with 49 circuits and 205 judges. Each county has its own superior court.

Courts in Georgia include Georgia's state court system and three federal district courts.

Georgia's Court Structure. The Georgia court system has five classes of trial-level courts: themagistrate,probate,juvenile,state, andsuperiorcourts. In addition, there are approximately 350 municipal courts operating locally.

The Supreme Court of Georgia is the highest judicial authority of the U.S. state of Georgia. The court was established in 1845 as a three-member panel. Georgia Juvenile Laws. In Georgia, you are an adult for the purpose of criminal prosecution at the age of 17. However, O.C.G.A. §16-3-1 states that the minimum age for criminal prosecution is 13 years old because a child under the age of 13 cannot form the requisite criminal intent to commit a delinquent act.

Any child age 17 and over is considered an adult under Georgia law. However, if the juvenile commits the crime on the last day of his/her 16th year, he/she may be treated as an adult, no matter how minor the offense.

The Intake process begins when a citizen makes a complaint to the Juvenile Court involving an alleged delinquent or unruly act by a juvenile. The juvenile is either released to their parents or placed in the detention center pending a hearing.

If the minor is over the age of 13 and is charged with certain violent crimes (e.g., rape, aggravated sexual assault, murder, voluntary manslaughter, armed robbery), the minor is considered an adult and will be tried as such, unless the court deems it appropriate to transfer the case down to juvenile court.

Five states-- Georgia, Michigan, Missouri, Texas and Wisconsin--now draw the juvenile/adult line at age 16. Missouri raised the age of juvenile court jurisdiction to age 17 in 2018 and the law will go into effect January 1, 2021.

Anyone 13 years old and above can be tried as an adult if he or she has a record of previously breaking the law or commits a serious crime. Minors who are 15 or 16 years old are automatically tried as adults for certain offenses, including murder, aggravated criminal sexual assault, and armed robbery with a firearm.
