The most common testing configuration consists of a two-day bar examination, one day of which is devoted to the Multistate Bar Examination (MBE), a standardized 200-item test covering six areas (Constitutional Law, Contracts, Criminal Law, Evidence, Real Property, and Torts).

In order to pass the Texas bar exam, you must score at least 675 of 1,000 points. This equates to 135, based on the MBE's 200-point scale. The scores of the exam sections are weighted as follows: MBE 40%, essay questions 40%, P&E questions 10%, and MPT 10%.

The Texas Bar Examination is a 2½-day test with four components: the Multistate Performance Test (MPT); the Procedure and Evidence questions (P&E); the Multistate Bar Examination (MBE); and the Texas Essay questions.

For the July 2017 bar exam, the national average MBE score was 141.7. If you take the bar exam in a UBE jurisdiction, it is easy to figure out a passing MBE score. Take the score you need to pass and divide by two. If your jurisdiction requires a 266 out of 400 to pass, then a 133 is a passing MBE score.

We suggest aiming for at least 60% to be safe. If you are aiming for an MBE score of 136-140 (which is a passing MBE score in jurisdictions that require a 272-280 to pass) you should aim for 62%-65%. We suggest aiming for at least 65% to be safe.

California, Louisiana, and Texas are still considered among the hardest bar exams in the country. This is in part due to the amount of legal topics tested and the length of time involved in taking the exam. For example, the Texas bar exam and the California bar exam both cover around 14 areas of law.

When Examinees Find Out: It takes approximately 10 weeks for February bar exam results to be released and 9 weeks for July bar exam results to be released.

Based on the information we receive, results typically are released late (around midnight), though in July 2017 results were released in the afternoon. You should receive an email from the New York Board of Law Examiners when results are out.

You may take the Bar Exam a maximum of 5 times. If you sit for any part of an exam, it will count as one of your 5 attempts.
