Amending marriage certificates is done in order to correct errors found on the original certificate. Amendments are not used to make changes on the document. Examples of errors include: spelling errors, grammatical errors, adding information to empty "blank" lines.

Amendments to applications for a marriage license or the license shall be completed by the judge of the probate court of the county in which the license was issued. An amendment to divorce reports shall be completed by the clerk of the superior court of the county in which the decree was granted.

An "Amended VOP Affidavit " is one that is filed after an initial VOP Affidavit and which supplants and supersedes the original, becoming "the" VOP Affidavit in the case.

Changes to Marriage Certificates/Applications To make a change to the application and/or certificate, please contact the probate court in the county in which the marriage occurred.

You may be able to correct minor errors by asking the Georgia Department of Vital records to amend the birth certificate without a court order. If the Vital Records office will not make the correction, then you must file a Petition to Correct an Error on a Birth Certificate with the Superior Court.

If you filed for a name change when you applied for your marriage license in order to take the name of your spouse, your marriage certificate from your county's probate court is your legal name change document. You do not need to apply again for a name change through the county's Superior Court.
