An Affidavit of Support, also called the Form I-864, is a document an individual signs to accept financial responsibility for the applicant who is coming to live in the United States. The person who signs the Affidavit of Support is also called the “sponsor.”

Use this form to agree to provide financial support to a beneficiary of certain immigration benefits for the duration of their temporary stay in the United States. You must file a separate Form I-134 for each beneficiary.

Answer: USCIS and consulates generally prefer I-864. However, I-864ez can be used when you are the sponsor that filed I-130, the relative is the only person listed on I-130, income that you are using is entirely your income from salary or pension as listed on W-2 form.

Each sponsor, including you and your family friend, must submit their own Form I-864. The Form I-864A, Contract Between Sponsor and Household Member, is typically used when additional household members who are not the primary sponsor are contributing their income to meet the income requirements.

3 The I-864W is used to establish that the person is not required to file an I- 864 Affidavit of Support. This means that if someone is exempt from the Affidavit of Support requirement, the Form I-864 is not simply omitted; rather, the Form I-864W is submitted in lieu of the I-864.

If you are using the income of people in your household or dependents to qualify, a separate Form I-864A for each person whose income you will use. However, an intending immigrant whose income is being used must complete Form I-864A only if their spouse and/or children are immigrating with them.
