Spousal maintenance is normally durational that is, it has a set duration, normally long enough for the payee spouse to become self-sufficient. However, there are cases, given age, health and inability to support themselves, that the payee may be awarded nondurational or permanent alimony.

Not all divorces qualify for alimony. Courts consider factors like the length of marriage, income disparity between spouses, and ability to be self-sufficient.

The affidavit of support is a legal contract between the sponsor and the U.S. government that states the sponsor is financially responsible for the person coming to the U.S. on a visitor visa (which includes the K1 and K2 visa).

A financial sponsor, including a petitioner, must be at least 18 years old and either a U.S. citizen or a lawful permanent resident (LPR). The sponsor must also have a domicile (residence) in the United States.

A sponsor letter for a visitor visa should clearly state the sponsor's full name, date of birth, address and contact details, relationship to the visitor, and a pledge to financially support the visitor during their stay. It must also outline the purpose of the visit, the duration, and where the visitor will stay.

A letter of invitation or Affidavit of Support is not needed to apply for a visitor visa. If you choose to bring a letter of invitation or Affidavit of Support to your interview, please remember it is not one of the factors used in determining whether to issue or deny the visa.

An affidavit of support is a legal document that demonstrates financial backing for a foreign national seeking to immigrate to Canada. It is required as proof of the sponsor's ability to financially support the individual they are sponsoring.

The Consular Officer may request that Form I-134 , Declaration of Financial Support, be submitted by the visa applicant, the petitioning U.S. citizen fiancé(e), or a sponsor in the United States.
