A) Complete an Affidavit of Support form and; b) Gather evidence of their finances and other supporting documents (See Step 5).This form is required in most familybased green card applications, including CR1 and IR1 spouse visas and some employmentbased green card applications. In order to fill out an affidavit of support as a sponsor, you must be a U.S. citizen or green card holder. The purpose of the Affidavit is to assist consular officers in determining whether a visa applicant will have adequate means of financial support in the US. An Affidavit of Support sponsor must be at least 18 years old and must be either a U.S. citizen or a lawful permanent resident. Some sponsors temporarily reside abroad and intend to move to the US once a family member's immigrant visa is issued. Whenever any legal papers are served, the person serving the papers must fill out a written form that says how the papers were served.
