For federal tax purposes, the terms spouse, husband, and wife mean an individual lawfully married to another individual. The term husband and wife means two individuals lawfully married to each other.

A spouse is a significant other in a marriage. The word 'spouse' can only ever be used when a couple is married legally or by common law. A male spouse is called a husband while a female spouse is called a wife.

Generally, both spouses should be titled in the deed of the family's primary residence (homestead), a second home, or even a vacation home. Different forms of joint ownership permit couples to hold the title of property in Florida, including tenancy by the entirety.

You're not alone if you and your partner simply decide to live together as if you were married, a situation people often call a “common law marriage.” In the eyes of the law, however, common law marriage doesn't exist unless you live in a few select states—and Florida isn't one of them.

(3) For purposes of interpreting any state statute or rule, the term “marriage” means only a legal union between one man and one woman as husband and wife, and the term “spouse” applies only to a member of such a union.

To obtain a marriage license you need: Identification: a picture ID such as a driver's license, state ID card, or valid passport; both parties will also have to provide their Social Security numbers, but do not need to provide their Social Security Cards. Fees: $93.50.

The statute says that any common law marriage entered into after 1967 is invalid. Therefore, if you and your partner began a relationship after January 1, 1968, you cannot be legally married in Florida without a marriage license, regardless of how long you have been together.

The first step is to file a Petition for Alien Relative, Form I-130, with the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) for your spouse (husband or wife) to immigrate to the United States.
