You can claim anywhere between 0 and 3 allowances on the W4 IRS form, depending on what you're eligible for. Generally, the more allowances you claim, the less tax will be withheld from each paycheck. The fewer allowances claimed, the larger withholding amount, which may result in a refund.

When you use the form IT-2104 Employee's Withholding Allowance Certificate for your state and city taxes, you may claim as many allowances as are justified by your circumstances. However, if you claim more than 14 allowances, you must complete the Withholding Certificate Affirmation.

A spouse cannot be claimed as a dependent. NEVER. Instead, you file a joint return. You can file a joint return with your spouse even if your spouse has little or no income. If you have been claiming your spouse as a dependent, you have been filing incorrectly.

The number of allowances you claim on your W-4 doesn't have to match the actual number of dependents or family members you have on your tax return. There could be other reasons, such as side income, for you to reduce the number of allowances you claim.

Effective January 1, 2023, the federal maximum Community Spouse Resource Allowance increased to $148,620.00, while the community spouse monthly income allowance increased to $3,715.50. The maximum family member monthly allowance increased to $822.00.

If you want to get close to withholding your exact tax obligation, then claim 2 allowances for both you and your spouse, and then claim allowances for however many dependents you have (so if you have 2 dependents, you'd want to claim 4 allowances to get close to withholding your exact tax obligation).
