Generally you may, but you cannot call yourself a “Certified Public Accountant” unless you have completed the requirements and obtained a “CPA” license.

State-level accountancy boards issue CPA licenses. These boards are supported by the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA), established in 1908 to uphold professional accounting standards. NASBA also administers the Uniform CPA Examination aspiring CPAs must pass to obtain their initial license.

The California Board of Accountancy (CBA) regulates the accounting profession for the public interest by establishing and maintaining entry standards of qualification and conduct within the accounting profession, primarily through its authority to license.

The mission of the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy is to protect the public by ensuring that persons issued certificates as certified public accountants possess the necessary education, skills, and capabilities and that they perform competently in the profession of public accountancy.

A CPA is a certified public accountant who is licensed by a state board of accountancy.

Texas CPAs must complete 120 hours of CPE every 3-year Rolling Reporting Cycle including no more than 60 hours in Non-Technical courses. TX CPAs must complete 4 hours in Texas-specific Ethics every 2 years.

The CPA exam is one of the most difficult professional tests available. You should consider extensive review prior to sitting for each section, as each has a near to 50 percent retake rate. The four sections are: Financial Accounting and Reporting.

(a) Retired status. A licensee who is at least 60 years old and has affirmed that the licensee has no association with accounting may be granted retired status at the time of license renewal. A licensee in retired status is exempt from the fingerprinting required in §515.1(d) of this chapter (relating to License).

The CPA Exam is considered one of the hardest professional exams because of the amount of information it covers and how long it is (16 hours divided between 4 exam sections).
