The Uniform Bar Exam (UBE) is a 2-day exam, promulgated by the National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE), but administered, graded and scored by individual states. It also results in a portable score that can be transferred to other UBE jurisdictions, subject to certain limitations.

If you are a qualified lawyer in your home jurisdiction, you can sit for the California Bar Exam. You still have some other requirements to fulfill, but your foreign license is a shortcut in the application process. If you have a law degree but are not licensed, you may qualify to sit for the bar if you complete an LL.

California Reciprocity California doesn't offer reciprocity but offers a shorter bar exam for attorneys who are admitted in other states and who have been in good standing as an attorney in those states for at least four years prior to their application.

Candidates, who are successful on the bar exam and the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination or on motion from a reciprocal US jurisdiction, are then certified by the Board to the Appellate Division to conduct the Character and Fitness Review.
