The written component of the exam may include performance on the MPT, the MEE, and/or locally developed essay questions. The composition and weight of these subcomponents may vary by exam administration. A total scaled score of 258 is required to pass the Wisconsin Bar Exam.

The Wisconsin bar exam is a two-day exam. Wisconsin has not adopted the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE). Day 1: Combination of six essay questions from the Multistate Essay Exam (MEE) questions and/or Essay Questions drafted by the Wisconsin Board of Bar Examiners, and two Multistate Performance Test (MPT) questions.

SCR 40.04(5) An applicant who has failed the Wisconsin bar examination three times is ineligible to write the Wisconsin bar examination unless special permission is given by the board under reasonable conditions as it may require.

If you received a scaled score of 145 or higher on the Multistate Bar Examination (MBE) in the past 36 months and you were admitted in another jurisdiction on the basis of the examination in which you obtained that score, you may be eligible. See Rule 7B for additional requirements.

In the United States, the diploma privilege is a method for lawyers to be admitted to the bar (i.e. authorized to practice law) without taking a bar examination. Wisconsin is the only jurisdiction that currently allows diploma privilege as an alternative to the bar examination.

Wisconsin does not offer formal reciprocity with other jurisdictions, but candidates can be accepted to the WI Bar without examination if they can prove that they have been substantially engaged in the practice of law in any US jurisdiction for 3 of the 5 years preceding application submission.
