The Attorney Registration & Disciplinary Commission (ARDC) is an entity established by and reporting to the Illinois Supreme Court that maintains administrative responsibility for the registration and discipline of Illinois lawyers.
Esq. stands for Esquire and is added to a lawyer's name once they pass the bar exam. J.D. stands for Juris Doctor, which is earned by graduating from law school. Someone given the title of J.D. has received a law degree but cannot practice law because they're not a bar member.

You must meet the following requirements: You have a J.D. or L.L.B. You have licensed to practice in the highest court of a US jurisdiction for at least five years. You have been certified by the Committee on Character and Fitness. You passed the MPRE. You are a member in good standing of the bar in another jurisdiction.
In addition to graduating from an American Bar Association accredited law school, you must pass the Illinois Bar Examination, a rigid test of knowledge in all fields of law. And, you must undergo a thorough examination by the Committee on Character and Fitness to practice.
The Illinois Board of Admissions to the Bar requires a MPRE score of 80 or more. An applicant need not take the MPRE before taking the bar exam, but must have done so and obtained a passing score before he or she can be recommended for admission to the bar. It takes an average of seven years to become a lawyer in Illinois. That includes a four-year undergraduate degree, a three-year Juris Doctor program, and several weeks preparing for the Illinois bar exam—among other requirements.
