In order to let the opposing party, or defendant, know you are filing a civil action, you must serve the opposing party with a copy of your complaint. This service is accomplished by issuing a summons through the Clerk's Office. The Court has a standard summons form.

Each database provides different types of information, including the attorney's name, address, phone number, email address, education, area of practice or specialty, and years in practice. Most states provide the attorney's bar number, but some do not. In a few states, the state does not issue a bar license number.

Lawyers are licensed by a state agency in each state. That agency can help you to find out if a person has a law license and is permitted to practice in a particular state.
