While similar in nature, the main difference between the two is that a complaint is informal and is typically resolved between the employer and the employee. On the other hand, a grievance is a legal formal issue that follows strict guidelines which may require the need for intervention, contracts and compensation.

In order for the State Bar to investigate the attorney's conduct, the person seeking to complain about the attorney must file a written grievance describing the attorney's alleged Professional Misconduct with the State Bar's Office of Chief Disciplinary Counsel.

An effective grievance procedure provides employees with a mechanism to resolve issues of concern. The grievance procedure may also help employers correct issues before they become serious issues or result in litigation.

It's evaluated by the Grievance Committee. If it's founded, the lawyer is called in to discuss. If the lawyer violated the rules of professiojnal responsibilty, there are disciplinary proceedings that can result in a letter of caution, admonition, censure, suspension or disbarment.
