There is no bar reciprocity in California, though the state does offer a modified bar exam to those who have actively practiced law for at least four years immediately preceding their bar application.

The State Bar of California's Committee of Bar Examiners on Friday voted 8-3 to allow bar takers to sit for the exam remotely or in test centers located in other states or countries—provided they take it at the same time as those in California to reduce the risk of cheating.

Although the Wisconsin Board of Bar Examiners does not require you to complete any pre-legal undergraduate education, the American Bar Association (ABA) does.

Wisconsin does not offer formal reciprocity with other jurisdictions, but candidates can be accepted to the WI Bar without examination if they can prove that they have been substantially engaged in the practice of law in any US jurisdiction for 3 of the 5 years preceding application submission.

Inactive membership is for those who are eligible for active membership but are not engaged in the practice of law in this state other than pro bono service as authorized under SCR 10.03(3)(am). If you wish to transfer to inactive status, you need to inform the State Bar in writing, or by email at service@wisbar.
